Photographic Charges

The Museum is gradually compiling a library of photographs of objects in the collection. The format that is being used is 35mm colour slide. Requests for photographs in this format can therefore be provided at low cost. The same applies to providing images in a digital format. The price charged will not depend on whether a slide is already available for that object. Requests for other formats will be expected to pay higher costs.

The fee charged to users will comprise a photographic charge plus a reproduction fee. The former will be the same for all users, the latter will depend on the type of user and proposed publication or broadcast. Non-profit educational users will not be charged a reproduction fee. Except for users who request a photograph for personal or lecture purposes, photographs are provided on loan and must be returned after use.

The Museum holds a large collection of historic (mainly glass-plate) negatives. Production of prints is particularly difficult as specialist services and handling procedures are required. In order to offset costs and to reduce damage to the fragile originals this work is best done in batches. The income raised by the Museum should be sufficient to cover handling costs and to enable production of a copy slide at the time of processing. In this way most subsequent images can be provided more cheaply from the copy slide without subjecting the original to further risk. The charges for prints from historic negatives reflect these problems. The charge for ordering a print from a single negative is relatively expensive as the handling charge makes up most of the cost, but this charge becomes less significant for users ordering prints from a batch of negatives.
