Victorian Collecting

1890 Excavations started at the Roman town at Silchester. Finds began to be deposited on loan at the Museum in 1891.

1895 The Bayeux Tapestry facsimile was purchased by Alderman Hill and presented to the Museum.

1897 Three art galleries were opened in an extension to the Town Hall, designed by local architect W. R. Howell. The first pictures were a gift from William Isaac Palmer.
